La Península de Osa es una región de 150 000 hectáreas (ha) situada en el suroeste de la provincia de
Puntarenas, Costa Rica (entre 8˚ 21' 07˝ y 8˚ 46' 56˝ latitud norte y entre 83˚ 14' 28˝ a 83˚ 45' 24˝ longitud
este). La región presenta varios tipos de climas según la clasifi cación de Holdridge (1987), específi camente
bosque tropical húmedo y bosque lluvioso premontano, con una precipitación anual de 3420 a 6840 mm.
De enero a marzo se presenta una estación seca corta (aproximadamente de 35 días) y el promedio de
temperatura anual varía de 23 a 27º C (Kappelle et al., 2002).
La Península de Osa y las poblaciones vecinas del Golfo Dulce son unas de las principales reservas de
biodiversidad del país. Prueba de ello es la presencia de gran diversidad de especies de plantas (2142),
en la cual el grupo de plantas arbóreas está representado por unas 700 (Quesada et al. 1997). Por tratarse
de una región con un área relativamente pequeña, esta gran diversidad de especies se traduce en una alta
variabilidad específi ca por unidad de área, de 113-157 especies de árboles por hectárea (Thomsen 1997), lo
cual constituye uno de los datos de diversidad forestal más altos del neotrópico.
